Big Bone BBQ in Markham – BBQ Hits The Spot

I have never heard of Big Bone BBQ before until today. There are several locations throughout the GTA incuding Newmarket, and Vaughan. Their chain of restaurants also include Memphis BBQ. This Markham Big Bone location just opened up a couple of weeks ago, and they are located near Marville Shopping Centre, on Bullock Drive.

Its location is really strange, in a very industrial area surrounded by mechanic shops. The parking lot is awful, very small to accommodate the other businesses in the plaza. Big Bone BBQ looks very unassuming in the drabby plaza that they have selected as home.

We arrived just before 12pm, good thing too because it started picking up business very fast at 12:30 pm. The restaurant is very small, a square with a few tables to accommodate the eat-in crowd. We noticed quite a few customers coming in for take out. There is also a patio being set up for the warmer weather.

The menu was pretty varied, well priced and looked great! My sister and I shared the Big Bone Combo which consisted of 1 LB of wings, 1/2 rack of back ribs, cole slaw, beans, cornbread and fries.

We selected the Original Smoked Wings for our wings selection, which uses their regular BBQ Sauce. It was so delicious. Great smoked flavour and the BBQ sauce was tangy, sweet and zesty at the same time. My niece is a picky eater and even she devoured the wings. I thought the ribs were just good, not outstanding. They were very meaty but I felt a bit dry. They weren’t falling off the bone. They were also basted with their delicious BBQ sauce, which to me was what saved the ribs from being subpar. I am pretty sure Big Bone BBQ style is Memphis-style as well, just because the sauce was sweet and zesty.

The fries were good, even though I know they are frozen. Probably McCains fries with that crispy coating. The beans were very good – Had a honey flavour, with chunks of pork. Easy to eat, not overpowering. The coleslaw was good, tasted fresh and right amount of dressing. Cornbread was great, large piece sliced like a piece of a loaf of bread. In fact, we ordered another piece of cornbread because I needed to eat one on my own.

The Big Bone Combo was priced at just over $20. We also ordered a couple of the kids meals (chicken fingers/fries, and wings/fries) for my niece and nephew. Our tab with tax and tip came to $47. We had lots of leftovers to bring home.

Services was very good and efficient. No complaints about the girl who served us. We also arrived there before the crowd so that made the service even better and faster. I’m sure if we arrived at a busier time service would be slower.
