Safari Mediterranean Grill at Central Parkway (the best shawarma in my opinion)

There is a new shawarma place in the neighbourhood and I am very excited about it.  Its called Safari Mediterranean Grill, located in the same plaza as T&T Supermarket.

I only found out about Safari Mediterranean Grill because someone left a comment on this blog (I am assuming it is the owner).  I am always on the lookout for good shawarma places close to me and was really excited to learn about Safari Mediterranean Grill, and decided to try it out right away.  Not only is it great to be so close, but it is a great substitute for the expensive, mediocre eatery thats in the next plaza over.

Anyhow, we got there around 5 o’clock and the owners had just arrived (I guess because it wasn’t busy, they decided to take a break).  They opened only 7 weeks ago and so the place was still pretty sparse with no pictures or decorations.  The store was painted in earthy tones of orange and brown and there were a few decorative tables scattered throughout the store.

There was a sign in the window offering daily specials, such as 2 shawarmas for $9.99, 2 platters for $15.99, etc.  Today’s special was 2 falafel wraps.  But we felt like chicken shawarmas.  So, my daughter ordered the chicken shawarma wrap combo (with fries), and I had the chicken shawarma platter.  Our meals with pops came to $21.00.

The food was great!  The chicken was not just grizzly bits, but generous chunks of chicken.

The guy packed the shawarma wrap – lots of fresh hummus (tasted homemade), plenty of garlic sauce and hot sauce, and those nice pink and green pickles.

The platter costed a bit more than the wrap, but the serving was also more.  The rice was nicely seasoned (orange colour) and tender and tasted great with the generous serving of chicken.  The salad was freshly prepared cucumber and tomatoes with the right amount of seasoning.  He gave me a huge heaping of hummus with crunchy pita to eat with it.  I wish there was more pita because the hummus was so good.

We really enjoyed our shawarmas, and I will say the food was well worth the price.  We walked out with garlicky breath.

I hope I can help spread the word about Safari Mediterranean Grill at Mavis and Central Parkway because I hope they are able to survive.  It is a great food option in that plaza and a benefit to ME because I won’t have to drive so far for good shawarma.  Lets hope their quality stays top notch as it is today.

Update January 20, 2014

Safari Mediterranean Grill at Central Parkway deserves an update. I’m going to state it right here – I think they are the best shawarma in Mississauga. Since my first post over a year ago, I think the eatery has gone thru a few owners. It was starting to decline. This latest owner is a young guy. He seems really hardworking and constantly adding new items to the menu and new specials. Since he took over, the food has been amazing. He cuts up big chunks of chicken and gives very generous servings. The chicken is grilled until the outside has a bit of a crisp to it He added garlic potatoes to the shawarma platter and removed the salad. He is doing something right because the quality of the food is so good (I think so at least). I still don’t see a lot of traffic at that store, I hope he is able to generate more customers.

  1. Thanks for letting us know about this place.
Mississauga Central has needed a new shwarma option for some time now.

My family and I visited this place last night based on your review, but unfortunately we were very disappointed. We had 3 dishes: chicken shawarma, beef shawarma platter and 1/4 chicken dinner. The chicken shawarma was good and IF we visit again that’ll be what I’ll get. The rice that came with the other meals had a nice colour but very bland. The beef platter could have benefited with a little more meat and less rice, also, the meat was very, very dry and not very flavourful. My son who is a little carnivore like me actually left back some of the chicken because he didnt like it, again very bland. On the plus side, the people behind the counter, I assume the owners, were very friendly. I do wish the owners luck but they need to do better if they hope to attract new customers.

  3. Ahh, that is too bad you did not enjoy your dinner. I guess everyone has different taste buds. I have only been there once a few days ago and only had the chicken shawarma and was pleased with what they presented to us. To be honest, I’ve never had beef shawarma before and don’t really have any interest in trying it, so I can’t judge whether this place is good or bad for it. I am looking forward to going back to Safari to try their falafel wrap though.

Thanks for your reviews, Reggie. I work close to Safari and will definitely give it a try when I don’t have time to pack my lunch. Thanks for doing these reviews – I always read them and look forward to them:)

Unfortunately Reggie I have to say I tried this place and it was very disappointing. I had the chicken shawarma plate, I knew I was in trouble when he didn’t shave anything new off the shawarma machine but just heated up what was already in his pan. There are many shawarma places in Mississauga and the key to the success is allot of traffic so you are getting fresh meat. The owner was super nice and friendly though, maybe I give it another shot once they have had the time to establish themselves.

Have you tried On a Bun which is just up the street near Mavis and Burnhamthorpe. I bought a WagJag which is why I tried it and it was very good. Just curious to know if you had visited this place.
