I haven’t had hakka chinese food, especially chilli chicken in ages. I used to go to China Garden on Airport Road regularly when I worked around that area. I have tried a few places closer to home, but I wasn’t crazy about any of them.
Yesterday, we were looking for something interesting to eat around Creditview and Burnhamthorpe area. We noticed a new hakka place right beside Bubble Republic Tea House called Chilli Chicken House. Oh wow, I was thinking to myself – yum! Chilli Chicken!
So we went in to have our dinner at Chilli Chicken House. First impression – Outside was unassuming. Inside was a pleasant, very clean, quiet little place. It seems like it might be good. Minimalist furnishings, very clean cutlery and table tops, chairs are in good order – very organized. The owner looks nice and friendly.
He gave us a menu in a leatherish covering. Of course, I chose my usual hakka dishes – chilli chicken, hakka chow mein and this time we ordered chicken corn soup to start.
I have to say the food was great! The servings were huge. When I compare it to China Garden, I have to admit Chilli Chicken House comes out on top where the food doesn’t leave you thirsty. I love the chilli chicken dish from China Garden (still my favourite), but the dish I had last night from Chilli Chicken House, I only had to drink to diffuse the spiciness, not because of thirst. Wow, could I ever taste the pepper seeds in the chicken!
I like adding the vinegary hot sauce to the hakka noodles. I’m glad this place had it as well. The noodles are pretty much on par in comparison with China Garden.
The prices were very reasonable – Chilli Chicken – $8.95; Hakka Noodles – $7.95; Small Chicken Corn Soup – $3.50 (enough for two people).
Also, the food is halal for those who have special diets.
A great place with delicious food and friendly service!
