La Imprenta – Havana, Cuba

I just came back from holidays in Varadero, Cuba.  So I haven’t had a chance to visit any new local places at home.    I thought I would blog about a restaurant we tried while on a day trip to Havana, Cuba.

First, I want to tell you about an amazing pina colada we had while in Cuba. It was at a pit stop on the way to Havana, about 1 hour from Varadero.  The pina colada stand was just a little run down stand in the middle of no where.  But I have to tell you, it was the most delicious pina colada we ever tried – cold, frothy and delicious.

Our Havana day trip included a lunch.  We all didn’t have much expectation of what we would eat or where we would eat….but when our tour guide brought us down an attractive cobblestone part of the city and stopped us in front of this gorgeous restaurant, we were all tongue-tied.  As you can see from the photo above, it was absolutely gorgeous inside!  It reminded me of one of those restaurants you would see in a romantic, quirky movie in a very foreign land.  There was a trio of musicians to entertain the diners.

There was even a washroom maid manning the restrooms.  She handed out a few pieces of toilet paper and would check the toilets to ensure they are clean and the floor mopped after each use.  It was very nostalgic.  I wish I took a picture.

We sat in an upper part of the restaurant so our group wouldn’t disturb other restaurant patrons.  Unfortunately, it was also the sunny part of the room (you know how hot Cuba gets).  So we were all hot, lethargic and thirsty.  Even the butter that was served with the bread melted in a few minutes. I ordered the lemonade slushy to quench my thirst.  In fact, I had to order a few.

For our meal, we had a choice of chicken or fish.  I chose chicken which was served in a tomato based sauce.  It came with mash potatoes, rice with beans and a crispy plantain.  It was attractively presented.  We had black bean soup as an appetizer, along with a salad that looked like cole slaw.  The soup was very tasty.  But like I said earlier, most of us couldn’t eat our meal because we were so hot.  All we wanted to do was drink.  We were served ice cream for dessert, but even that melted before it hit the table.

I really wish I took more pictures!  This had to be the most beautiful restaurant I’ve ever seen.  Loved it!
